Healthy Help for New Gardeners

Since launching my site to the world a couple of weeks back, I’ve had a chance to exchange emails with many of you and our conversations have been pretty similar. Here’s a snippet from a Facebook message I received from Brianna:

“Hey Lady! I’m super intrigued by what you do… My only issue is I don’t know where to start.

I’ve tried gardening and failed. Now I don’t really have a space to garden but want to get a box to put on my patio (4X3or 5X3) so I can have fresh produce but I don’t know where to start.

What would your advice be?”

My reply to Brianna’s message was pretty longwinded, but I still hardly scratched the surface of what I wanted her to know about starting a healthy garden! So, I sat down and let it all out. I created a downloadable pdf for those of you who would just like some advice on getting started. It includes:

  • Advice for siting your garden

  • Bed & planter options for patios, slatted decks, and on-the-ground gardens

  • Soils 101 – the difference between dirt, soil, topsoil, garden soil, potting soil and which one you should choose

  • All about planting in your zip code & finding local gardening gurus

  • Sourcing healthy plants and seeds

(FYI, I consider this to be Volume One. I’m busy working on putting Volume Two together, which focuses on managing your Healthy Garden after you’ve got it all set up. In the meantime, I would love any feedback you have about Sowing the Seeds of health – does it answer your questions? Was it clear? I definitely want it to be thoroughly helpful, so feel free to point out where it could use some extra info! As always, I’m at: You can also record your question as an online voicemail here)

Lastly, I’d love for you to know about a special Facebook contest I have all lined up to start on Monday March 31. Each day, you’ll have a chance to win a $25 Gift Card to Gardeners Supply Company (they also stock lots of cool home & kitchen stuff) by answering a question in just three words. On Friday, I’ll post a question that will give you a chance to win an even bigger prize: you’re choice of my Mind Your Minerals kit for your home garden or the My Greens Light Garden that I used to plan my garden in miniature this winter for this article I wrote for Gardeners. Here’s a sample question for the contest:

And a sample answer?

Tasty Brussels Sprouts

Be sure to come over & ‘like’ Jenny Grows on Facebook so that the contest questions will appear in your newsfeed!

And one more thing for any of you Instagrammers out there: I think I’m an addict. If you’d like to stay in touch, Instagram is a great place to see what I’m up to (and of course I’d love to follow along with you, too!)
